Stella Goodman is a strong believer in PRO-CHOICE.
Women have spent their lives being told they are less than that of a man. Way back when, women were forced to wear clothes that completely cover their bodies, to wear corsets to fit a man's perspective on how a woman should look like and to be a wife who lives and breaths for her husband and children. Years later, women had to fight long and hard to get the simple civil right to vote. Even in the present day, women are still fighting for equal pay and respect, and now we have to fight for the right to our own bodies.
Abortion is controversial, but for what reason? Abortion is a procedure that a women chooses to make for herself and for her family. Often times, abortion is not a choice. Stella Goodman's mother died tragically when her Catholic church would not allow her to abort her child, whom she could not wait to have. She wanted to have a child, but her health was in grave danger if she did not abort the child, and it became a tragic loss of a mother and an unborn child. Stella Goodman remembers this day vividly and would not want anyone else in America to have to go through what she did.
Why PRO-CHOICE?
1. Women should absolutely have the right to do whatever they want with their own bodies.
This should be an obvious reason why everyone should support the choice to abort a child or not. In many cases, a woman could have been raped, and she should have the right to NOT carry a baby that she did not consent to. How can you even argue a human's right to their own bodies? In addition, all people have the right to medical attention that they need or they have the right to refuse medical attention. No one should be allowed to take someone's rights away from them.
2. Failure to abort in a dangerous health situation can lead to the death of a LIVING HUMAN.
Stella Goodman's mother isn't the first case of a tragic death due to a failed abortion. This horrible tragedy happens to women every year, and if we make abortion illegal, many more American families will suffer horrible losses. Imagine you are about to have a new baby sister or brother, but your new sibling isn't growing correctly inside the womb. It becomes a fatal situation, and if abortion is illegal, you will not only lose your new sibling, whom you have never met, and your mother, who fed you, put you to bed at night and taught you everything you know. Do you think you could survive that loss?
3. Some pregnant women may not be financially, physically or mentally stable enough to bear a child.
Teenagers who have their whole lives ahead of them may become pregnant their senior year in high school. They just got accepted into their dream school but now their world is crashing down. They worry that they don't have any money, a job and now they won't be able to go to the school they dreamed about when they were a little kid. If they were forced to keep the child, the baby may grow up in an unstable environment. Of course, foster care and adoption are available, but there is no guarantee that the child's life will be fulfilled, plus they will have to grow up knowing their parents may not have wanted them for one reason or another. In addition, a very ill person, mentally or physically, may become pregnant and they legitimately cannot bear a child or deal with all the things that come along with a pregnancy, including stress and depression. No one should be able to force another to go through such a huge change in their lives.
Why NOT Pro-Life?
Allowing the government to make abortion illegal is allowing the government to control what ANY PERSON can and cannot do with their body. This action would only create a chain reaction, leading to possibly forced vaccinations and restricting the amount of children a couple can have. In addition, illegal abortions will only lead to more dangerous, self-inflicted abortions, along with higher rates of depression and drug use for women. Finally, it is not of moral standard to take away someone's rights to their own body.
PRO-CHOICE ABORTION FACTS
1. Nearly 9 in 10 abortions take place in early pregnancy. This fact shows that most abortions take place when a the fetus is merely a group of cells that would eventually turn into a child. This fact nearly eliminates the argument that abortions kill babies, or living humans.
2. Fewer than 1% of women are harmed during or after the procedure. Legal abortion is safe. Illegal abortion could potentially kill many living females that still have a life to live due to un-safe abortions. Un-safe abortions include using a coat hanger, consuming opium or gunpowder, throwing oneself down a flight of stairs, or even inserting a leech into one's private area. Can you imagine being a female who cannot have a baby and having to torture yourself? We should not be allowed to take this right away from a woman.
3. 14,000 women per year have an abortion due to incest or rape. Believe it or not, that is almost 50% of abortions. Many women are forced into sexual intercourse and unwillingly become pregnant. There would be no efficient way to determine whether an abortion was necessary due to a rape. That process would be terrifying for a rape or incest victim. Imagine being forced to carry and gave birth to your abuser's child.
